even the leaves are lovely! May 04, 2011

I've planted all the varieties of Nasturtium that Botanical Interests offer and after much trial and error and research, I realized the best way to get these seeds to germinate is NOT to soak them, as the packet recommends, but to cut away ("nick" or "scar") part of the seed. The seeds are sort of like little walnuts, and the key is to nick away part of the hard tan shell surrounding the seed and scrape away some of the dark brown membrane under to expose the white inside of the seed. If you do this before you plant them, and bury them in some semi-moist (NOT soggy) soil, you'll have great luck.
I love these cherry rose jewel nasturtiums. They are generous even in their germination- instead of the standard "two leaves on a stem" appearance after planting, the seed sprouted up four tiny stems with multiple frilly leaves. A nice surprise! I can't wait to see the flowers, and will post a photo to accompany this review as soon as that happens.
Good luck!

These seeds arrived very quickly. I planted them on a Saturday and they were sprouting in less than 1 week. I highly recommend this seller and the product. I am very pleased with this purchase.
Blooms more orange than cherry color Jan 12, 2012

Nasturtium is a challenge to grow in this part of Florida but it does grow for a short time in fall - after it cools down a bit - till frost. I don't know if the heat has anything to do with it, but all the blooms on my plants were orange, except for one that was stunning cherry color. Leaves of the plants looked absolutely perfect, though! Since they are edible, nasturtium leaves also make nice addition to salads and sandwiches.
